Cooperwood Senior Living won a highly anticipated project-based award at the 2024 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards Gala. It was a highlight of the AIA Architecture & Design 2024 event in June. This annual gathering unites the architectural community to honor the design accomplishments of industry leaders.
Here’s Why Cooperwood Senior Housing Was Honored
Cooperwood is an assisted living community in Paradigm Senior Living’s management portfolio. This project began as a redesign of traditional housing units, with Duvall Decker Architects rethinking the typical institutional framework. Though limited in size, the units were reimagined and reshaped with large windows and strategically designed exterior walls.
The Duvall Decker architects also converted the previous main institutional building into houses, with a faceted exterior and sunshades. Overall, they achieved an elevated design aesthetic at Cooperwood—a dynamic balance of practicality and beauty.
A Distinguished Design With Two Lifestyle Options
The Cooperwood Senior Living property also has a small creek running through it, offering a connection to the outdoors. Residents enjoy landscaped views and lovely plantings. A bridge building connects the residential wings; there, you’ll find many of the community’s on-site amenities.
Cooperwood also offers an area dedicated to residents requiring memory care, which features a continuous circulation route. The consistency and simplicity of the design makes it easier for residents to navigate their communities and identify their apartments. The memory care area also has a secure, internal landscaped courtyard.
